What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?
Using a single building information model of the existing conditions allows the designer to see how the new proposed building will interact with the existing one. Since the buildings are different, they are still connected and need to interact as such. If the designer were to create a proposed building without using a single building information model of the existing conditions, it might not connect well with the existing building, doors and walls might not align, and other aspects may not interact functionally or efficiently. This is why it's important to utilize the previous building when designing the new proposed one.
In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?
I wanted to give options for a more open space vs. a more private space. In one of the options, there are fewer enclosed spaces. There is still privacy with walls, but everything is mainly open to everybody, creating a very open and inclusive environment. The other option allows for more privacy. It includes separate spaces for students to go to study on their own or in groups, a private area to watch TV, or enjoy a coffee. This allows the university to decide which spaces they'd like to be more enclosed and which ones they'd like to be more open.
