What are the principal advantages of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations?

I think the principal advantage of using a single building information model of the existing conditions as the foundation for modeling proposed additions or renovations instead of creating a separate model is that I can use the existing dimensions of the original building and copy and paste different elements so that the proposed additions are more cohesive. Also, I can create a demolition plan that emphasizes what in the original model needs to be removed.

In your project, which features of the proposed design did you choose to model as design alternatives?

In my project, I chose to model alternate furniture layout for the socializing space as design alternatives. I chose to create alternate designs of the socializing space because I thought that since the building extension prioritizes student community, I should design for the space that brings the most people together that do not already know each other. One of the biggest challenges in modeling them as design alternatives was realizing that some furniture components look the same when rotated in 3D, so sometimes my furniture was oriented in the wrong direction. This was a easy fix, though, since I would then create a 3D camera view of the space to check the furniture’s orientation.
