What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?
◦ What does each of them need from the model?
◦ What do they care about most, and where do those priorities conflict?
A drawing is a picture of a building. A model is a description of one.
◦ What questions can you ask a model that you cannot ask a drawing?
What the lighting looks like, how much room do you have to fit things, realistic ADA accessibility, where is the sun in relation to the building, grading of the site, etc.
◦ Are there things a drawing still communicates better? Give an example.
An example is a schematic design of a weir or any city details for anything, like a city’s manhole. It can sometimes be more clearly represented.
This course splits the work across Forma, Revit and Forma Data Management.
◦ What is gained by using a different tool for concept, documentation and coordination?
◦ What tends to get lost in the handoffs between them?
◦ Who on a real project team is responsible for making sure nothing is lost?
Where should a building model actually live?
◦ What are the practical consequences of a model living on one person's laptop?
It is unusable for others. Without inputting your model in the cloud for others to see and work along side of, it can cause many delays if other groups aren’t working with the most up to date information.
◦ What changes when the model lives in the cloud, for the designer and for everyone else?
Any changes made to the model can be seen by everyone, and there is complete transparency when working in the design phase.
You will make hundreds of modeling decisions this quarter.
◦ Which ones are worth being slow and careful about?
Large scale developments OR very niche projects that have very specific details. Also, it is very important to take time to be careful and understand when you are designing something to be up to code or work a certain way based on code/what the client wants
◦ Which are worth being fast about, accepting that you may redo them?
Early stage projects just to get rough drafts out. When documents are going through the schematic design process and development design process where things are subject to lots of changes.
◦ How would you tell the difference before you have made the mistake?
Looking at the big picture of the project is super important. Really understanding what you are doing and why can help out with figuring how quick or slow to do things.
