What are the primary goals of creating a building model? Who are the key stakeholders?
The primary goal of a building model is to document different systems within the building in a detailed manner so that architects, engineers and contractors can collaborate, so that contractors can build it, so that owners can see their product, and so the building is well documented for any future maintenance, rennovations, or issues.
A drawing is a picture of a building. A model is a description of one.
A model can tell you dimensions, materials, locations, and updates from different stakeholders. Although a model generally has many more details than a drawing, sometimes drawings can be better at showing a visual of the final product. Building aesthetics can get overshadowed in a model that has many technical components to it.
This course splits the work across Forma, Revit and Forma Data Management.
When using different tools for concept, documentation and coordination, it allows different model parts to be segmented in a way that different stakeholders only receive model parts that are relevant to their scope of work. Although this often simplifies things for individual trades (electrical contractors only receive electrical drawings), coordination among trades can be weakened because of it. The general contractor/project manager is responsible that nothing gets lost in handoffs.
