The transformative power of BIM.

◦  Which specific thing in this course could not have been done with drawings alone?

Running sun hours, daylight, and carbon on the same building and comparing two facade options side by side. On paper I’d have had to guess which balcony strategy shaded more.

◦  Which things were harder in a model than they would have been by hand?

Quick sketching and fixing small things. The facade automation put windows in the wrong spots and I had to fix them one at a time. By hand I’d have drawn them right the first time.

Your building is a set of decisions, most made before you knew enough.

◦  Which decision are you most confident was right, and what evidence supports it?

Adding about 10,000 SF. I knew I needed more space. I had made my design based on no corridors in Mod 2.

◦  Which would you revisit, and what would you need to know first?

Balconies on every unit. I’d want to know how much residents value the outdoor space and what the balconies add in cost and maintenance.

You produced roughly thirty deliverables across ten weeks.

◦  Which one taught you the most, and why?

◦  Which felt like busywork at the time and turned out to matter later?

Every model in this course was a simplification.

◦  What did your model never know about your building?

◦  At what point in a real project would those omissions become unacceptable?

What's next?

◦  Which part of this work would you want to do professionally?

Capital project delivery on the owner or developer side, using tools like this to compare options before money gets committed.

◦  What is the biggest gap between what you can do now and what a practising professional does?

A professional knows what things cost, what gets built, and what usually goes wrong. I can run the analysis but I can’t yet tell which results to trust.
