How much detail should you include about wall, floor and roof composition at different stages?

◦  Conceptual design

◦  Preliminary design

◦  Design development

◦  Construction documentation

You moved a design from Forma into Revit this week.

◦  What survived intact, and what did you rebuild?

The overall building shape, location, and floor levels were carried over from Forma. However, I had to develop the floor plans, walls, doors, windows, and other building details in Revit.

◦  What does that tell you about what each tool is for?

Forma is more useful for exploring early design options and analyzing the site, while Revit is better for developing the actual building model in more detail.

◦  Knowing where the handoff lands, what would you do differently in Forma next time?

I would think more about the floor layouts and building dimensions before moving to Revit, so I would have fewer adjustments to make later.

Many manufacturers provide Revit families for their products.

◦  What is the advantage to the manufacturer of giving them away?

It makes their products easier for designers to include in projects, which may increase the chance of those products being selected.

◦  What is the benefit to you of using them over the generic library families?

Manufacturer families provide more specific dimensions, materials, and product information, so the model can better represent what will actually be used.

◦  At what point does it become appropriate to switch from generic to manufacturer specific?

I would use generic families during early design when things are still changing, then switch to manufacturer-specific families once the design and product selections are more finalized.

The core is located early and moved rarely.

◦  Why does it get fixed before most of the building?

◦  What are the consequences of a core that does not stack vertically?

◦  What did locating the core force you to change about your Week 3 layout?

Your Insight result did not match your Forma result.

◦  What accounts for the difference?

Forma uses a simpler building model, while Insight considers more detailed information, such as building materials, windows, and energy settings. The different assumptions can lead to different results.

◦  Which number would you show a client, and how would you explain the gap?

I would show both results but explain that Forma gives an early estimate, while Insight uses a more developed model. I would also mention that the results may change as the design becomes more detailed.

◦  Does a more detailed model automatically produce a more trustworthy prediction?

Not necessarily. A detailed model can still give inaccurate results if the inputs or assumptions are incorrect.
