Design memo of 300 to 500 words: what you read in the site, the three strategies, what the analysis said, your recommendation, and the surprise.
I only conducted the two analysis required for the site mentioned in the assignment which were the sun hours and wind. The sun hours were pretty good. It mentioned that the ground received sun for at least hours and the wind was below 2-3 m/s. I came up with three proposals: a u-shaped with a courtyard in the middle, a rectangle with a courtyard in the middle , and a tower. For me my biggest concern was the wind because if it’s too strong it can cause problems for the structural design team. However this was not an issue for any of my designs. All other aspects were similar except for the amount of sun proposal 2, which is the reason I decided not to go it. My decision was between proposal 1 and 3, but I ended up going with 3. I recommend doing three because the design takes less site space, so I could do more things on the ground. also due to being a tower with the base being the largest and second floor and above having a smaller base you can make that part into an outside space. For me I chose it because I felt like there was more room to be creative because when compared to comparison matrices they were very similar. One thing that surprised me about my site was how uneven the ground was. I’ve been to Mission dolores park which is near where my site is. When I was there I thought the only uneven thing was that hill from the park, but the bottom of it flattened. This was not the case. Also, I thought my site would be more windy ( have higher m/s). This is the whole reason why I picked a site with a hill to cover the wind, but I thought there would still be higher winds (m/s). This is why I designed my proposals blocking the directions of where the wind comes. However this wasn’t needed because even just sitting alone had low winds.Â
