Proposal 3 has been chosen tentatively to to maximize the the economic potnaital of the location and provide sweeping views over the bay. Proposal 2 provides great sound protection via the court yard design. To compensate for this, Proposal 3 will have to dedicate large green spaces, potentially

Design memo of 300 to 500 words: what you read in the site, the three strategies, what the analysis said, your recommendation, and the surprise.

151 Beach St, San Francisco, CA 94133, The site was listed in a recent San Francisco city survey of lots owned by the San Francisco county that could help address the housing availability and affordability in San Francisco.

This lot is suitable for mixed-use development with high-end apartments facing sweeping views of the bay and potential for an outdoor space. I know the roads around get busy as it is around a tourist attraction pier 39. The buildings need to address traffic noise while allowing sunlight, daylight, and views. I tested three designs: Proposal 1, explored a U shaped arrangement with an internal open space. Proposal 2 focus was a sheltered courtyard, using the building masses to reduce exposure to the surrounding streets. Proposal 3 explored a more open, linear arrangement that is common in many high rises. With the sole focus on views and sunlight. The analysis showed strong sun exposure is bad in some units in the u shaped more than any other building. . The daylight with units scoring 37 or higher on sun availability, Proposal 1 achieved 59%, Proposal 2 achieved 54%, and Proposal 3 achieved 83%. Proposal 3 also had the best views. Proposal 2 had quieter inner courtyard, with modeled noise levels of 55 dB or less. The wind analysis suggested that some outdoor areas in Proposals 2 and 3 could be suitable for sitting or standing, depending on their location. I will use Proposal 3 as the starting point for further development. It offers a balance maximum view and sun exposure. However, I still need to improve its daylight performance, and noise has to be addressed. One surprise was that aligning the geometric masses was challenging. Another surprise was realizing that I might have assigned too much space to retail at the expense of housing. I may consider that balance and give more space to housing while keeping enough retail to support an active street.
