Design memo of 300 to 500 words: how the massing changed from Week 2 and why, what the facade studies showed, what you chose, and where you overrode the automation
Compared to Week 2, the massing of my proposal changed slightly. Firstly, I expanded the first floor. Since I decided to make a residential building, my first floor needed to be a commercial floor. To make it different from the upper 4 floors, I decided to make it extend on the inner side of the building. I also had to shift my entire building with regard to the site boundaries. As I was adding grid lines, my building was a bit slanted, so I expanded it slightly and tilted it until its sides aligned with the grid lines. The new model now goes a bit beyond the site boundaries. Still, this did not impact the results for the daylight potential, sun hours, and total carbon.
With my first design, I chose 20’ and 30’ modular windows. Within these modular windows, there is a balcony and additional windows on the side (1 window if 20’, 2 windows if 30’). I decided to place these windows on the sides of the building that touched the outer part of each room. Thus, on the building’s sides where there were no rooms, such as by the staircases, I added typical commercial windows. I chose to add many windows in my design because the analysis results from Module 2 showcased high daylight potential and sunlight hours. I want to take advantage of this natural daylight to reduce the heating demand in my building. Upon running my facade studies, I noticed that most of the building receives adequate sun during the day. However, the inner side has low sun. Also, most of the building receives plenty of daylight. However, this may be too much daylight, which, in turn, would increase my cooling demand. Therefore, for my second design, I decided to reduce the size and number of windows.
Something worth noting is that my building is too close to the neighboring building, which decreases the amount of sunlight received by my first and second floors. If possible, I will be moving my site slightly to the left, away from this neighboring building. This should provide me with more accurate analyses.
