Design memo of 300 to 400 words: what survived the handoff, what you rebuilt, what assembly choices you made and why, and where Revit and Forma disagreed.

Most elements survived the transition from Forma to Revit. One aspect that had to be rebuilt was the stairs. When I tried extruding the stairs across all floors, it resulted in some issues, with certain floors not connecting. Instead, I redesigned the stairs, and was able to have each floor connect well.

For the wall assemblies, I chose to vary the insulation material in both exterior walls. For one, I chose fibreglass insulation, and mineral wool for the other. I decided to try both to see which would provide better R-values, and it ended up being mineral wool. However, mineral wool requires more energy and carbon to make, giving it higher embodied carbon. Thus there is a tradeoff between better insulation properties and embodied carbon, which I wanted to investigate.

For the roof, I decided to go with a green roof. Because of the mild climate of Albany, it serves as a great location for green roofs. I chose to cater my green roof design for smaller shrubs, as there is less structural pressure, and is easier to maintain. Additionally, shrubs are common native plants in California. I chose to put the green roof on the highest roof in my building because there is significant sunlight. Additionally, I want to use the larger surface area on the roof of the commercial building to place solar panels.

I found that Revit is much better at designing specific details compared to Forma. In Forma, I found it difficult to manage facade design because of the lack of granularity when it came to design control. On the contrary, in Revit it is very easy to edit details, such as stair railings, or doors. Additionally, it is easier to work between floors in Revit. In Revit, we are able to extrude mechanical shafts across all floors easily, which would not have been possible in Forma.
