Design memo of 300 to 400 words: what survived the handoff, what you rebuilt, what assembly choices you made and why, and where Revit and Forma disagreed.

The general shape of my building survived the hand off (being an [] shape). But I ended up remodeling my entire building from the previous module. My building was made up of multiple buildings, so there were doubly thick exterior walls and air gaps where there was not supposed to be. I also had interior walls going into windows because I did not set up modules of windows thinking it would be dealt with later.

To fix my building, I started by simplifying my building through removing the open entrance into the private courtyard to keep all floors above the first floor a single typical layout. Then I removed the splitting of rooms like restrooms, bedrooms, and living rooms. I changed where each type of living unit was located while adjusting the sizes. They are closer to actual standards for square footage now. I also changed the location of the stairs and elevators. Lastly I fixed the window and balcony placements and added doors.

For the exterior wall of the first floor, I used concrete with a thin layer of air, rigid insulation, and wooden planks. The wooden planks are for the aesthetics outside, but they really helped increase the R value for insulation. The air also helped a lot. Air should help for expansion of water too to mitigate cracks in the structural concrete. For the walls on the 2nd level and above, they are structurally held by birch wood. They have some air as well for insulation, then another layer of wood, and a gypsum wall layer for the interior which is common.

Revit and Forma disagreed for the core structures. The stairs went inside the walls and floors. As a result, they weren’t physically possible and had to be remade. The elevators had walls and elevator doors in Forma, but those disappeared in Revit. For the mechanical shaft, the floor had to be removed at each level in Revit.
