Design memo of 300 to 400 words: what survived the handoff, what you rebuilt, what assembly choices you made and why, and where Revit and Forma disagreed.
I ran into several errors when transferring my Forma model over to Revit and creating the energy analysis, and unfortunately the topography did not survive the handoff. I did make a building pad while the terrain was still in the model, so it should remain in the correct location. As for the building, I made several adjustments from Module 3, but no major dimensions were altered. I adjusted wall types, with one exterior wall type on the outer surface of the building and a different exterior wall type facing inwards towards the central courtyard. I made these thermally insulated. Then, small adjustments to window and door locations were made to make the model more cohesive, especially the windows facing towards the courtyard. But most importantly, I really tried to focus on the thermally insulated aspect of my walls, where I had R values of around 42 for my exterior CMU wall with cladding and insulation, and 23 for my wood sliding-on-wood-stud exterior wall. I also added a green roof, which I think will have both aesthetic appeal and thermal insulation properties. Since people will live on sides of the building with a higher number of floors, they will be able to see the green roof from the corridors. Also, the grass/garden that will be placed on the roof will thermally insulate by the water content in its soil and providing shading to lower rooftop temperatures on hotter days.
The comparison of my week 3 carbon footprint vs. my week 4 carbon footprint shows a drastic change. This highlights the importance of using sustainable and thermally insulating materials in construction, which I had never really thought of before. My total carbon of 3.24 M kgCO2e from module 3 decreased to about 825,000 kgCO2e. This makes me hopeful that I made correct decisions in the creation of some of my exterior wall types and proves the R values really did contribute to this massive decrease in total carbon.
