Design memo of 300 to 400 words: what survived the handoff, what you rebuilt, what assembly choices you made and why, and where Revit and Forma disagreed.
What survived the handoff
The massing, level heights, and window and balcony pattern came through from Forma. The walls did not. They arrived disconnected and broken at the corners, and rooms were not registering as enclosed.
What I rebuilt
I rebuilt the envelope in Revit with new wall, floor, and roof types, then placed the rooms again against the repaired walls. Forma worked well for massing and facade studies, but I had to simplify my building to make sure that the walls and rooms survived the transition.
Assembly choices
I built every assembly from wood to cut embodied carbon and push energy performance past the minimums for future analyses. Both wall types and the roof reach R-40 or better.
- The upper floor walls have wood siding over a ventilated cavity, continuous wood fiberboard, plywood sheathing, a softwood stud core filled with cellulose, and gypsum board.
- The ground floor walls have wood siding over fiberboard and a CLT core, and gypsum board.
- I chose a green roof with no terrace. The earth is over wood fiberboard and CLT. It slows stormwater runoff and keeps the roof surface cooler in summer.
- The floors are CLT structural slab separate from the finish layers, which are wood and carpet.
- The windows are triple glazed, with the strongest low-E coatings on the west and south, a moderate coating on the east, and clear glass on the north. West windows take the afternoon sun off Shattuck, and north windows get no direct sun, so they can pass more daylight.
Where I changed the design
I removed the balconies from the lowest residential floor so the green roof fits beneath it. Balconies there would have collided with the planted area. I also removed the curtain wall facades besides on the front entrances as the assignment described.
Where Revit and Forma disagreed
Forma treats a wall as a surface carrying a window pattern. Revit treats it as a stack of layers that must join at corners and close around each room. Forma’s walls did not connect properly, so I had to fix my forma wall build and retranslate it. Forma’s carbon analysis assumed roughly 5% more total carbon than Revit’s.
