Design memo of 250 to 400 words: what your calculated field computes and what it told you, and what you learned about your own design from having to document it.
For Module 5, I used the Gross Floor Area (GFA) that Revit provided to get a better understanding of the overall size of my building. Revit automatically calculated the GFA, which made it easier for me to see how much space my building takes up across all six floors. It also helped me think more about how I was actually using that space and whether my layout made sense.
One thing I noticed was that even though the building has a lot of square footage, not all of that space is available for offices or commercial use. A good amount of it is taken up by staircases, bathrooms, hallways, and mechanical areas. These spaces are obviously necessary, but it made me realize how important it is to plan them out properly so they don't take away too much space from the main areas of the building.
Something else I learned from this assignment was how much more detail goes into documenting a building than I originally expected. When I was first designing the building, I was mainly focused on getting the layout and overall structure how I wanted it. Once I started putting together the floor plans and sheets, I had to pay a lot more attention to smaller details, like how rooms connect, where people would walk, and whether everything was consistent between floors.
I also realized how important it is to make sure the drawings are organized and easy for someone else to understand. Working on the roof plan, elevations, and individual floor plans showed me that having a good design is only part of the process. You also need to be able to communicate that design clearly.
Overall, this module helped me understand my building better and made me realize how much thought goes into the documentation process. It was definitely more time-consuming than I expected, but I learned a lot about Revit and how to take a building from a model to a complete set of architectural drawings.
