Design memo of 250 to 400 words: what your calculated field computes and what it told you, and what you learned about your own design from having to document it.
I calculated the total occupants for the entire building. I calculated this in my Room Schedule - Area schedule by first inputting each room type’s associated occupancy factor. Then, I inserted a function to calculate the occupants per room by dividing each room’s area by its occupancy factor. Then, I made sure the schedule showed both totals for each level and a grand total, which came out to be about 302 occupants. I guess I was a bit surprised at first because I knew that the building was large. However, I estimated about 200 people being able to live there, not 300+. Additionally, I was surprised by how many doors and windows I modeled. It calculated 229 windows and 185 doors, and there will be even more as I model more rooms in more depth.
I thought that it was really interesting how much Revit can calculate just based on the model, and I see how applicable this must be in the career world. I have had a little experience with a Preconstruction Estimating team, and they highlighted how much of their estimates come from the schedules created through Revit. I hope to continue to use these functions to see what else we can estimate for the building. I also really enjoyed using the new AI tool for some repetitive tasks and was pleasantly surprised by how well it worked. I am curious what else we will be able to use the AI tool to help out with larger tasks.
