Design memo of 250 to 400 words: what your calculated field computes and what it told you, and what you learned about your own design from having to document it.

This week was a big change because the course stopped being just about drawing a 3D model and became all about creating real, clean blueprints so other people can actually understand the design.

In my room schedule, I set up a calculated field called Occupant Load using a simple formula: I took the total area of each room and divided it by 100. This automatically tells me how many people can fit in each space. Looking at the data, it was interesting to see that while the apartments upstairs have a normal, safe density, the big active area on the ground floor can hold a ton of people at once. Seeing the actual numbers made me realize that the first floor is going to need way better exit routes for safety and more organization, which is something I totally missed when I was just looking at the 3D model.

Making the 6-sheet set taught me a lot about how a real building works. Putting in the ceilings on the typical floor made me think about the actual plumbing and HVAC ducts that have to hide in the roof space later on. Also, actually placing the beds, toilets, and sinks inside the apartments showed me where some spaces were a bit too tight. Taking the time to add dimensions and tags made the whole building layout make way more sense, and it showed me exactly how clear my drawings need to be so a contractor could look at them and build it without getting confused.
