Design memo of 300 to 400 words: which system and why, where the grid fought your architecture, what you changed in the architectural model.
System and why: I chose Type III wood framing over a two-level concrete podium. The podium runs from B01-L00 to B01-L01. The wood frame is for levels 3 through 8. Residential floors favor support structures at unit separations, and wood delivers this at the lowest carbon cost of the presented options. The ground floor is for open retail/commercial space, so concrete columns make more sense (as it also must support the structure). The cantilevers are also concrete structural walls and extend through all of the levels.
Architectural changes: My Week 3 massing has six wood stories above the level 1 podium and ground floor, from L02 to the L08. The brief suggests wood capped near five stories over the podium, so six stories fits within this suggestion. I can remove the top level in further revisions if necessary. Other changes I made included aligning the stair and elevator openings better with the structural system. I also made the floors wood as suggested in the assignment review and followed the other mentioned material selection steps from this week. I also fixed an error I was having with the shaft openings when creating the cantilevers.
Where the grid fought the architecture: The previous residential walls didn’t fit correctly within the suggested spacing from the assignment review, which I implemented. This is because my building has different dimensions and unit dimensions than that of the assignment reviews. The units will have to be adjusted to fit the structural system. However, these adjustments were not too severe, and some units could potentially have columns within them as part of the design, or column spacing could hypothetically be adjusted based on if it were to meet real-life structural analysis guidelines.
Clash result: The first Forma check returned 1500+ clashes across 1500 groups for the structural model. Most listed groups involve assembled stairs, which appear to carry their own supports through structural floors and walls. Others involve wall-to-wall or joist and column interactions. I expect to classify most of these as not-issues after review. The issue report highlights them all as 1 issues, as individually classifying 1500 groups as non-issues would be redundant, and future improvements and alignments will reduce clashing and help reveal true issues.
