Design memo of 300 to 400 words: which system and why, where the grid fought your architecture, what you changed in the architectural model.

I chose the steel framing with 10 x 39 W steel columns and beams throughout my build. For me, I was considering the sustainability aspect but the heavy load that may be experienced by my site. Additionally, I needed to be able to place columns in a way that did not need to be consistent through each level, in the manner a wood podium would have to. Steel is also more ductile, has long spans, and allows for fast erection, with my build having three buildings; fast construction is a huge consideration in my design process. Out of all the options, concrete has the biggest embodied carbon, and given the fact that this is supposed to be a sustainable home, this is a very important component.

Additionally, my build is 8 stories tall; in a real-world setting, a wood-over-podium, although the cheapest and lowest carbon option, is constrained by height, which would require modifying a huge portion of my design.

The grid used to construct the structural plan did not align all the way with my walls in my architectural build. I had ot manullay go into the model to change it, which became tedious given how many floors across the three buildings were present in my model. I ultimately decided to remove the unit space aspect of my final floor and decided to make it just an entire green floor. When also considering the scale of my buildings, I do not believe the extra floor was necessary for units. So instead, it will be used just as a pathway for the green roof.

Within my clash report, there were issues with where the walls, doors, and floors were. It was unclear to me. I struggled with creating the structural walls in particular, as I received many warnings about them clashing in Revit. However, I also remember creating “structural” walls in my architectural model before creating the structural plan. And so, I wonder if this is a huge modeling issue on my part that I may need to go back and fix. :(
