Sustainability to me means the energy consumption per sf for buildings. It’s a study of how we may have passive designs to orient the building and alter the shape of the building so we may wisely use local resources such as solar, wind, and humidity, to benefit the energy use of the building while maintaining a comfortable living environment. Sustainability also means new clean technologies including solar panels, utilizing geothermal, efficient MEP systems, to reduce the energy needed by the building. I would consider how the building may maintain the same temperature and humidity throughout the year while using a minimal amount of energy. Apart from the building functions, I would consider the source of the building materials including using locally abundant materials to reduce transportation energy waste, minimize carbon footprints during construction, etc.
