- I plan to demonstrate that a building can be cost efficient, usable/comfortable, durable, while being sustainable. This will ensure that the center has plenty of examples to promote sustainability techniques.
- Design Goal: Net Zero Site
- Measure: Energy Use Intensity (EUI)
- Targets:
- 35 kBtu/ft2yr (2022 Zero Code in CA)
- 60% reduction desired
- Strategies:
- Reduce the cooling and lighting load
- airtight building
- high R value construction
- high albedo and SRI façade
- Maximize daylighting while using thermal mass to reduce excess heat
- Operations: daylight sensors
- Renewable energy sources
- Solar power
- CELs (Mexico's Clean Energy Certificates)
- Design Goal: Use sustainable + durable materials
- Measure: Volume of traditional portland cement vs. volume of alternative/sustainable cements (i.e. with fly ash, ECC concrete, new SCMs)
- Targets:
- Minimal value: 50% sustainable material
- 100% sustainable
- Strategies:
- Locally sourced material
- Use innovative cement mixed with waste (fly ash, GGFBS, etc.)
- Design Goal: Maximize Green Space
- Measure: Green Area Ratio: square footage total/green space
- Targets:
- 50%
- 70%
- Strategies:
- Green roofs
- Green walls
- Build around the existing green landscape (i.e. minimal disturbance, fit the buildings to the environment not the other way around)
