- your overall HVAC system strategy
- My overall HVAC system strategy is to include as many passive elements as possible to reduce the overall size and complexity of the mechanical systems necessary. Windows and shading will be utilized appropriately to provided daylighting and heat gain when needed and shading when not needed. Additionally all windows will be equipped with night insulation shades to reduce the heating load needed during the evening. Natural ventilation will be used to the greatest extent possible to both maximize energy efficiency as well as user health and comfort. Since Jasper Ridge is in a relatively moderate climate the use of mini-split heat pumps will be an efficient and effective way to heat and cool the space. This will eliminate the efficiency losses for a duct system thus resulting in a total reduced energy load.
- your heating/cooling strategy and how you implemented it in your design
- My heating/cooling strategy will be to employ ductless mini-split heat pumps in each zone of the property and multiple in larger more open zones. This will allow for a customized approach on the HVAC system. Each zone will be able to individually controlled and maximize user comfort. Additionally if certain parts of the exhibit are open or closed the corresponding systems can be turned on and off to make sure the system is running at maximum efficiency at all times.
- The indoor unit portion will be placed within the walls towards the floor so that heating and cooling is delivered directly to the building users. The reason for this is because of how high the ceilings are at this property. Aesthetically pleasing diffusers will be placed inconspicuously at the ground/ankle level to allow the air to flow freely.
- The outdoor portion will be placed on the outdoor wall and surrounded in the same material used on the wall siding so that it is camouflaged into the side of the building.
- any special HVAC system challenges that you encountered
- Since I decided to go ductless with the mini-split heat pumps I did not run into as many challenges in creating the HVAC system in Revit
- Some challenges for the ductless system will be making sure we have a building team that is well versed on dealing with ductless systems and stays on top of their maintenance
