My name is Frederick Tan and I’m a second year SDC master student. I did my undergrad in mechanical engineering at Stanford. After undergrad, I spent ~3 years doing research full time at the Stanford Precourt Institute for Energy. The research involved designing modified greenhouse structures to be used as grow houses and crop dryers for use by small scale farmers in India. I spent about 1/4 of that time living in rural Indian villages working with farmers and engineers on the ground. As a grad student, I’ve mostly focused on general sustainability as well as building energy efficiency. I’ve also worked part time at the Stanford Educational farm for a few years now and really enjoy small-scale agriculture as both a personal hobby and as a means for social and environmental sustainability.
