For 2 or More Units: Creating Forms with Revit Conceptual Masses

‣

Part 1

The parameters that can be flexed include the Building Height, Building Base Width and Depth, and the Top Profile Width and Depth.

‣

Part 2

Similar Dynamo workflow as above

The parameters that can be flexed include the Building/Top Height, Base Side A (width) and B(depth); Top Side A and B

💡
Point to Ponder: What’s the advantage of exporting the values to Excel?

We can add headings for each column to show what each variable represents. We can also do further manipulation in Excel itself, such as applying formula, in an easier way than with Dynamo or Revit directly.

‣

For 3 or More Units: Creating Forms with Dynamo or Grasshopper Geometry

image
image

The parameters that can be flexed include the Base, Middle and Top Radius; the Middle and Top Rotation (Degrees); the Building Height; the number of sides of the polygon; and the height of each storey.

💡
Point to Ponder: Which of these inputs tested has the biggest effect on creating a desirable building form?

Here, the rotation value did not seem to affect the final variables of concern. Rather, the radius of the top profile (or other profiles) have a significant effect on the three variables, and thus has the biggest effect on creating a desirable building form.

‣

For 4 Units: Summarizing the Testing Results

💡
Point to Ponder: Which of these pairs of input values gives the most desirable result? Which building form would you recommend to the developer and why?

As the degree of rotation does not really matter, it is the radius that is the main determinant. The lower the radius, the higher the ratio. This means that for each unit of floor area, there is less or a smaller unit of surface area of envelope. Thus, the maximum value of the ratio (with 25 radius) would be recommended. This would minimize the construction cost (less gross floor area) while minimizing the surface area, relative to gross floor area, which is one of the goals of the project
