Charlie Tilney-Volk

Hey everyone, I’m Charlie – I’m currently an 1st-year M.S. in mechanical engineering. I did my undergrad at UVA, also in mechanical engineering with an aero-related focus. I grew up in SF but attended school on the east coast for seven years prior to Stanford. I’ve spent the last two summers at General Atomics Aeronautical in San Diego, both working on conceptual payload design and more recently the aero performance and CFD of some of their predator aircraft. After this quarter I will be taking a leave of absence to join the Mercedes Formula 1 team as an CFD aerodynamicist for a year in the UK. I’ve had exposure to parametrization on other programs such as Siemens NX/CATIA/SolidWorks, and I’m most interested in vehicle performance-related design. Although this class seems to be geared towards architecture, I’d like to walk away with just a strong intuition of how to produce modular designs that can be fine-tuned to excel in various areas of application (structural, aero, etc.) – more than anything, how to “set up” a model effectively. I’m looking forward to expanding my horizons in architecture as well!
