For 2 or More Units: Modeling a Parametric Structure

This first design is meant to be on the larger scale and act as an outdoor amphitheater covering. It has a rounded shape with varying arc sizes on both the front and the back so it has a more interesting shape. It can also function to better frame the stage itself.

For the design approach, the first step was to create the controlling lines, which were the 2 arcs. Then, the number of ribs divided and connected the arcs, which was used to create the loft and the beam sweep. Finally, the panels were generated. Depending on the design intent, some simple colors were used to render the intended materials.

In this first iteration, the main parameters is the width of each of the arcs, and the distance between the two arcs. The model also allows the arcs to be on a tilt, seen in the angle of the covering. The number of ribs in both directions are adjustable. The beams are intended to be steel, and allow technical theater items like lights to be hung from the structure. The panels are means to be canvas-like material stretched between the steel beams to give some shade, but still allow sunlight to pierce through.

For 3 or More Units: Transforming Your Geometry

Previously, the arcs were the controlling line/factors for the design. In this update, they are updated to sin waves for more interesting shape. The two sin waves are allowed to be updated separately like the arcs before. The amplitude and number of wave can be adjusted. The angle that the wave sits on can also be adjusted to allow more or less cover on the ends of the structure.

Large Scale

The large scale, as previously stated, can be intended as an amphitheater covering. For the medium size, the covering can be for the entrance of a building, and act as rain shelter. At small scale, it can be a bus stop shelter. The section sizes and number of ribs needed to be adjusted for different scales to be more realistic to the size of the structure.
