Modeling Approach

  • Stage 1 (Rise and Shine): I created a base surface and panelized it into a U/V grid. Using Dynamo, I sampled pixel data from selected images of Ultraman (my childhood hero) and mapped those values to the grid, translating the image's brightness and hue into dynamic variations in the panels' height and color.
  • Stage 2 (Gonna Need Shades): I built a multi-level building massing and evaluated the outward-facing normals of the exterior wall panels. By calculating the relationship between these normal vectors and the sun's directional vector, I used the resulting solar directness to parametrically drive the size, geometry, and color of the facade's shading elements.

Dynamic Design Parameters

  • Stage 1: Number sliders to control the base surface dimensions, the density of the U/V panel grid, and the amplitude/scaling factors for how drastically the image brightness affects the panel thickness.
  • Stage 2: Number sliders controlling the building footprint (length, depth, and upper-level offsets), U/V divisions for the facade panels, and the sun's position to dynamically update the shading elements in real-time.
