  • Friend #1 = Younger (15 yo) ; Mom = older (50 yo); Friend #2 = Same (17 yo); Friend #3 = Younger (16 yo)
  • All friends = High School students; Mom = Medical Data Analyst/Statistician
  • Friend #1 and Mom = Suburban towns (hour drive to city); Friends #2 and #3 = Small city

Key Findings from the Interview

  • When it comes to sustainability:
    • Friend #1:
      1. When I say sustainability what issue comes to mind first?
      2. A: Climate change + ocean pollution came to mind first, but I think I’m more committed to economic sustainability right now

        2. What made you think of this issue? Is it a really important issue to you?

        A: It's pretty important to me because I think it’s necessary to benefit/support local and small businesses, particularly during the pandemic when a lot of them have definitely been struggling. My parents have also emphasized how important it is to mostly buy locally/from small businesses so I also try to do the same.

        3. Can you think of anything you're doing to help this issue in sustainability? locally? individually? in everyday life?

        A: My family buys a lot of our vegetables/fruits from a local farm during the summer and we try to support local/small businesses, especially ones that have messages/goals that are important to us.

        4. Do you ever talk to friends about this issue or sustainability in general? Why or why not and how often?

        A: …. I mean I guess you occasionally send environmental instagram posts/videos and if it comes up in convos then yeah. But for the most part no just bc it’s not a main priority for a lot of people in everyday life.

        5. Do you want to do more to help sustainability and these issues? anything you want to do but can't do for some reason?

        A: I mean yeah preferably, but it’s also kinda difficult while still living at home.

        6. Why do you think you can't do more about the issue?

        I mean I definitely think I can do more but i just don’t make it a top priority in my life, especially since it is oftentimes more expensive to buy from small businesses rather than from big corps.

    2. A: Fast fashion

      2. What made u think of this issue? is it a really important issue to you?

      A: I like fashion and it's a big part of my everyday life.

      3. Can you think of anything you're doing to help this issue in sustainability? locally? individually? in everyday life?

      A: Promoting smaller businesses etc.

      4. Do you ever talk to friends about this issue or sustainability in general? Why or why not and how often?

      A: Yes, not very often. The subject gets negative and tiring after awhile.

      5. Do you want to do more to help sustainability and these issues? Anything you want to do but can't do for some reason?

      A: Yes but it is a issue regarding larger corporations, something we can't make a huge difference in.

      6. Why do you think you can't do more about the issue?

      A: I'm too broke to help or make a big impact.

  • Mom:
  1. When i say sustainability what issue comes to mind first?

A: Recycling and reusing things over and over again.

2. What made you think of this issue? Is it a really important issue to you?

A: Yes, so that there’s no end of resources

3. Can you think of anything you're doing to help this issue in sustainability? locally? individually? in everyday life?

A: Recycling cardboards, bottles, papers, etc.. Reuse one time use forks, spoons after washing it to save it from trash that’ll need a lot of underground space to bury and energy to do so

4. Do you ever talk to friends about this issue or sustainability in general? Why or why not and how often?

A: Yes, because it’s a habit and public issue to share my concern with others.

5. Do you want to do more to help sustainability and these issues? anything you want to do but can't do for some reason?

A: Yes, to be involved in local environment protection / land reserves organization’s activities to promote natural resources and raise awareness to environment

6. Why do you think you can't do more about the issue?

A: The general public need some guidance and recycling company need funding to recycle things with cost.

    1. When i say sustainability what issue comes to mind first?
    2. A: Climate change

      2. What made you think of this issue? Is it a really important issue to you?

      A: School projects, the news; it is not that important to me because I can’t save the world and I feel like I will die before it would kill me.

      3. Can you think of anything you're doing to help this issue in sustainability? locally? individually? in everyday life?

      A: Recycle? I'm not sure if that works but I could also use renewable sources of energy (I don't know how but it sounds like a good idea)

      4. Do you ever talk to friends about this issue or sustainability in general? Why or why not and how often?

      A: No, I feel like we have so many other things to talk about. We don’t like to talk about the world ending or negative things.

      5. Do you want to do more to help sustainability and these issues? anything you want to do but can't do for some reason?

      A: Maybe. I would help if I could make a big difference.

      6. Why do you think you can't do more about the issue?

      A: Because I’m just one person and I can barely make a scratch.
