Interview 3

Who Did You Interview?

  • I interviewed my high school friend.

Demographics That Might Provide Helpful Context for Their Responses

  • Female
  • Younger than me (15 years old)
  • Rising Junior at Monta Vista High School
  • Lives with her parents and two brothers (one older, one younger)
  • Lives in a suburban city

Key Findings from the Interview

  • What comes to mind when you hear the term "waste" used in a green way?
  • My friend thinks about pollution, recycling, general environmental projects, mindsets, and concepts.

  • What kind of waste do you care most about and why?
  • She cares most about recycling because she's noticed a lot of times that there isn't really a choice to recycle even if she wanted to. There isn't always a way to go green even people want to. For example, at her elementary school, her school promised that their trash would be sorted and the recyclable items would be recycled. However, it turned out that the recyclable items and trash items went to the same place. She thinks that knowing where her trash ends up is very important.

  • How do you reduce waste in your life?
  • For food waste, she usually eats all of her food or saves it so that she can eat it later. She is against wasting food and always tries to finish all her food. Additionally, she says that she grew up in a household that discourages wasting materials and resources, such as toilet paper and paper towels.

  • How are you or the people around you contributing to waste?
  • She has noticed that a lot of her fellow students straight up throw away their lunches and just waste a lot of food at school. Sometimes her family also contributes to waste by using excess materials such as plastic plates and utensils. Sometimes she doesn't think her actions through and does what is most convenient rather than what is most environmentally friendly.

  • What kind of product do you think would help reduce the waste you mentioned in the earlier question or just waste in general?
  • She thinks that making environmentally friendly options and alternatives could be a great way to reduce waste. If we were to make these green options more accessible and cheaper, then it would encourage more people to take on those environmental options. Although people might want to go green, they usually don't because it's not as convenient or cost-effective.
