Your Recommendation for the “Best” Design Option

I knew I wanted to have a mandalic design where there was a central atrium and then building falling of the atrium at lower heights. I also knew I wanted as much sun exposure as possible in order to incorporate the green houses into the building. Luckily, the Copenhagen site features ample south facing sunlight that be used to grow produce for the cafe.

Initially, my first design (3rd from the left in side by side comparison and 2nd from the left in the images of design proposals) had a lot of angles that produced sharp shadows. It also did not maximize the south facing sunlight available in the plot of land provided.

Thus, to combat these issues, I lengthened the building and created design #2 (2nd from the left in side by side comparison and 1st from the left in the images of design proposals). This building, ultimately, decreased the shadow prevalence of the first building and increased south-facing wall exposure.

However, I had what seemed like a novel idea to angle the south facing walls to create a greater area for sunlight to come in. I then built design #3 (1st from the left in side by side comparison and 3rd from the left in the images of design proposals). While it appeared to be a good idea, the design created too many shadows, defeating the original purpose of the design.

Therefore, I decided proposal number two would be the best fir for my building.
