My first impression when I think about a sustainable expo center is mass timber building. Haha, but I did that last Spring during 137B which Linh Dan knows all too well about. Sorry for the headaches, Linh Dan! However, I’ve had an idea for awhile to do a mass timber pavilion or building on my own terms and my first design is a grid of timber with solid forms holding the offices and core functions. The building would have been something akin to the Kanagawa Institute of Technology. However, the grid would have been spaced out slightly farther and of course the structural members would have been larger. It would also be… less sterile. There is something about polished concrete and painted steel that is just… Off putting. The glazing would have been encased by the structural members too. Mass timber is lovely, but unfortunately… it burns😕 Should the burning matter though? Humans have built wooden structures for years… they burn and are rebuilt. However, would that be good for a public structure of this nature? I wish I could say yes… but probably not.
KAIT
Another thing I’m slightly interested in is the architecture of PVs. Often, PVs are crucial for a building seeking to be net zero or positive, but more often than not they are hidden on a roof. I think there could be some interesting architecture come out of PV design.
Also, as I think about this building more and more, I want it to be a product of it’s region. The building I was orignially wanting to design is not informed by the three sites of New York, Sao Paolo, or Copenhagen… I will have to go back and see!
Honestly, besides KAIT I have not seen any buildings of interest yet. I will continue to look.
