List your three or four guiding design goals using this format for each goal:

Goal 1: Sustainable Heating and Cooling

  • Measure:  Energy Saved per Year and Emissions Saved
  • Targets:
    • minimally acceptable value: 70% of heating and cooling without traditional air conditioning
    • desired / target value: 90% of heating and cooling without traditional air conditioning
  • Strategies:
    • Using geothermal heat pumps to provide heating in the winter and cooling in the summer
    • A second design strategy for achieving this goal: Insulating the building with earth

      Goal 2: Water Sponge

    • Measure:  The ability to soak up excess water from 500year storm events
    • Targets:
      • minimally acceptable value: a site that can absorb up to 10 inches of water on the area of the site
      • desired / target value: a site that can absorb up to 16 inches of water in the area of the site
    • Strategies:
      • Building into the ground and covering the top of the building by earthworks and plant life.
      • A second design strategy for achieving this goal: Using absorbing concrete or porous pavers that allows plants to grow through them

Goal 3: Accessible to all New Yorkers

    • Measure:  The space can be totally wheelchair accessible
    • Targets:
      • minimally acceptable value: 80% of the space is accessible to wheelchairs
      • desired / target value: The building should be 90% accessible by wheelchair barring janitorial and mechanical rooms
    • Strategies:
      • Following ADA guidelines to design spaces. If the building has multiple floors, then having elevators.
      • A second design strategy for achieving this goal: The building could all be on one level.
      • Another thing is whether the building will have a walkable lawn. If it has a sloped lawn then it would probably not be wheelchair accessible.
