- Rushed Ruth is a busy girl! She is pre-med at Stanford and is never in less than 18 units. This girl needs to be cut some slack. She doesn’t have time to think about which bin to put her to-go sandwich container in, she has to be thinking about her next assignment or reciting her organic chemistry notes over in her head. It’s not like Rushed Ruth doesn’t care about the planet or the impacts of recycling, it’s just she doesn’t have time to be putting time and effort into making sustainable decisions, especially when she rushing from class to class. Rushed Ruth barely has time to prioritize sleep, so she is constantly exhausted and drinking a cup of coffee on the way to her next classes or while studying outside of the library before disappearing into it for hours on end. The problem isn’t that Rushed Ruth doesn’t think waste sorting has an impact on the environment, the problem is that she does not have time to be prioritizing waste sorting when she is juggling so many other things.

Intersection of human and planetary health
Rushed Ruth needs to be educated on the impacts on waste sorting on the planet because not only does proper waste sorting affect the planet, but it also has significant effects on human and animal health. Since Rushed Ruth wants to be a doctor she SHOULD care more about waste sorting if she knows it also affects human health, right?
Take out the extra thinking
Rushed Ruth needs to simply and conveniently be able to sort her waste because she is constantly in a hurry and doesn’t have time to pause and think about sorting her waste before disposing of it. She needs simplicity in her extremely complex educational career. If disposables were labeled more clearly on where they should be sorted, or if recycling and compost bins were in more en route to her classes, she would be able to more easily sort the waste.
Lower the stress
Rushed Ruth needs to take a step back to slow down because if little things like thinking about waste sorting stress her out, undoubtably she is stressed out and needs to take time for her self. By taking fewer units, communicating with her professors, taking some remove herself from outside clubs, or even taking some time off of work, could be helpful in relieving some un-needed stress within her life.
