Forma for site data to send to Rhino
‣
- In the left menu bar, click the third icon (Extensions).
- Click Add Extension, and download the “Autodesk Forma Plug-in for Rhinoceros”.
- In the description of the plug-in, there are video instructions on how to use the plug-in:
‣
- Pick site location
- Import desired data (terrain, buildings, roads, satellite image, etc.)
- If possible, download as little data (lowest terrain area) as possible, as Rhino gets really slow the larger the data area.
- Create a proposal for exporting into Rhino
- Draw a site limit. This is important for splitting the site from the mesh.
- Copy the URL while in the desired proposal.
‣
- Type Forma in the command bar, and it should open a menu that looks like the following:
- Paste the URL copied from Forma into the first link. Select the Rhino proposal if you have a specific one allocated for site importing.
- You should now have a layer called “Forma layers,” with a sublayer of site limits if they were created.
- To make the site editable rather than a block, open the Forma plug-in menu; below the “Load Site Data” button, you should see the other imported data. Hover the mouse over that data, and a button that says “Bake” should appear. Click on that.
- As you bake the data, they should appear as sublayers of Forma layers.
- Click each block instance and explode it.
‣
- Grab the top of the mesh and use the “dupborder” command, which should draw a polyline that traces the mesh border.
- Switch to Top view and use the “Drape” command. Change the scale to a smaller number, such as 1 or 2, in order to make the surface more refined and similar to the mesh. When dragging the window, it is ok to leave extra space around the mesh.
- Use the trim command to trim the extra draped surface.
- Use the split command to split the surface into two parts, the site and the surroundings.
- Create a new layer for the site, so you can turn off the surroundings independently of the site.
‣
- Grab the top of the mesh and add it to a new separate layer. Additionally, create a layer called “Site topology”.
- Grab the line that outlines the site limit, and extrude it up to create a surface. Use the MeshSplit command and follow the instructions to split the inside of the site from the outside.
- Click on the site mesh and change its object layer to the Site topology layer.

Rhino and Revit Interoperability
‣
- Download the Rhino in Revit Plugin using the following link: https://www.rhino3d.com/inside/revit/1.0/
- Use the Revit process for importing data from Forma.
- Model the desired building in Revit, and leave the fine details for Rhino.
- Export the Revit file as a DWG, then import it into Rhino.
- Build the details in Rhino into the Revit file; no need to edit the Revit import in Rhino.
- Hide the Revit model and then export just the details.
- Use “Link CAD” in the Revit model and link the Rhino 3dm model. It should appear in Revit in the right location.
- Use Object Styles to change the material of the Rhino export by layer.
- Use the Manage Links menu to reload any changes made in Rhino since the last time the file was saved.
