Project 2 - Prototyping Plan

Parking Plans

  • Unidirectional rows of angled parking with pull through lane
  • Rows closer to gate have shorter free parking time limits (1min), rows further from gate have longer free parking time limits (30mins), exceeding time limits results in high parking fees
  • forbid curb side parking on main road to school, reserved for bike lanes, help faster flowing traffic
  • Parallel lanes with overpass for student access
  • multi-storied pickup lanes
  • grade based parking groupings
  • separate pickup locations

Roads & Roundabouts

  • One-way only, less intersecting traffic
  • Direct all cars to a main street
  • No left turn, make a U-turn on the main street later instead
  • Traffic lights to protect left turns
  • Trees and walls to prevent pick-ups at undesired locations
  • image
  • road slopes down toward the main road for drainage when it rains
  • the main place to get picked up should at least be 100 ft, so it can accommodates 4 cars at a time
  • speed bumps to make sure no cars are going too fast, caution drivers of pedestrians
  • road divided into two lanes, so cars can get to the curb and can pull out onto the second road to leave
  • curb should be painted red on lanes where cars are to be able to pass onto

Alternative Transport Options

  • bike lanes
  • School bus to town centers / transit centers (e.g. CalTrain)
  • Shared bicycles for temporary rent
  • In-school motivation: token to mark public transportation use & rewards to class / grade
  • subway underneath the school

For Students

  • seating that is sloped for students to see their parents car more easily like stone bleachers
  • canopies to provide shade but not block the road
  • Lean-only “seats”, uncomfortable to sit for long, encourage minimizing waiting time
  • car parked identification system to notify students
  • pre-staged kid locations
