Generative Design Study

Intended users

This tool is designed for architects, building designers, and sustainability professionals working on early-stage massing. It supports those seeking to evaluate the impact of basic form and orientation choices on cost, energy, and carbon outcomes, especially for low-carbon or high-performance building projects.

Need you’re trying to provide a solution or support for

In early conceptual design, decisions about building form—including proportions, curvature, and orientation—have lasting effects on sustainability performance. Yet, these effects are often difficult to assess quantitatively without complex simulations. This tool helps designers identify the alternatives that best meet the desired criteria including material cost, operational energy use, solar benefit, and embodied carbon etc. - enabling more sustainable decisions early in the design process when flexibility is highest.

Inputs

Building Height (10–500 m)

Building Width (10–500 m)

Window-to-Wall Ratio (WWR) (0.1–1)

Middle Radius (20-80m)

Base and Top Radius (20-100m)

Underlying logic of the model you’ll implement

The model creates parametric building forms using user-defined height, width, and radius values to produce curved geometries. It calculates wall, roof, and glazing areas based on geometry and WWR. Using fixed cost and environmental factors, it computes material cost, energy cost, solar value, and embodied carbon. glazing area and operational carbon, are also derived. The tool is implemented in Dynamo and connected to the Generative Design interface to visualize and filter options based on tradeoffs between sustainability metrics.
