Prototyping Goals

Why am I creating a prototype?

The type of feedback that will be most helpful for refining and improving my product idea is:

  • Does seeing all the garbage from one bin (such as through a clear bin or bag) and the success of the self-sorter make you feel more inclined to be wary of waste?
  • Does a self-sorting system make approaching the garbage bin easier- since your job is limited to simply tossing
  • Is a self-sorting system fool-proof? i.e. What if someone puts mixed waste in one closed container (ex. a compostable cup filled with a recyclable receipt and a battery topped with a plastic lid)- Will the system be able to detect this?
  • Does watching the system work through the clear bin make waste more fun and interactive?

Prototype Features

What product features will I prototyping? And why? What do I hope to learn from testing this feature?

  • Clear Bin for visibility of both the system and previous users’ waste build up
  • Shaking grid that separates waste according to their generalized shapes
  • One easy-to-locate hole

Prototype Media

How will you prototype and share these features with others to get their feedback?

I plan to create an initial sketch and/or inspiration board (due to limited time). Then, I would like to create a physical, interactive model that can better communicate the moving parts and clear feature of the bin.
