Your Design Journal entries this week should highlight your design thinking that influenced your decisions about:
- your overall strategy and the features of the structural system
I decided to use concrete columns and beams in the hot and humid climate of Sao Paulo. These will be well insulated to not absorb heat.
Wood was not used because of the humidity, they become mouldy.
- the material and framing system selected
As you will see in the figures/images below, for my circular building design I added six columns on the outer ring and inner ring.
The structural system should be on the peripheries of the building, visible from the outside and inside, but not coming in the way of the people
- the locations of structural columns and major framing elements
Because an important part of people flowing in and out of the spaces is not being obstructed Structural systems will look nice on the outside and inside, adds more character to the building.
These external supports and supports on the inner ring will also (check your assumption) be sufficient to support the building.
The concrete columns were an 18” diameter
The major beams were 16x32 inch and they were in a radial pattern, emanating from the center core and going to the outer periphery
- any special structural challenges
Because I was working with a circular structure, the patterns of the beam system for the section of the floor opening had to be done manually
I also see some conflicts of the structures of the columns with the doors and windows.
