- The National Aquatics center in Beijing was initially built to host the 2008 Beijing Olympics sports events such as swimming. It is nicknamed “The Water Cube” in Chinese. It has a signature blue exterior, which naturally reminds people of water. The outer surface and roof facade of the rectangular venue can collect 10,000 tons of water, 70,000 tons of clean water and 60,000 tons of swimming pool water every year, which in sum saves 140,000 tons of recycled water each year.
This design is a huge success because the theme of water permeates every aspect of the building: the blue exterior evokes imagery of water, the building is used for swimming competition, and it saves thousands of tons of water every year.
I also want to design a building that not only captures aesthetic appeal but also prioritizes environmental sustainability.
- The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles has a very irregular exterior building and I personally like buildings with irregular geometry very much because buildings with irregular geometry have a unique charm that entices people to explore further. Inspired by this, I aim to incorporate elements of irregularity into my own building design.
