Design Strategy & features of structural system

For the structural design of my building, I selected steel frame system consisting of W14x43 structural columns, W14x30 structural beam & beam system with max span of 50’ and max spacing of 6’.

I ensured that no columns obstructed essential views or natural light, and modeled the beams and beam systems around the building's openings.

The reason I chose steel over other materials are:

Steel offers superior strength and durability

It is non combustible, and its fire resistance increases safety

It is resistant to moisture, which is the main concern at my site in New York due to high humidity

It is highly recyclable, even 100% if planned properly which aligns with my sustainability goals

It has lower repair cost and more cost effective in the long run

Structural Challenges

The unique design created a tough challenge while placing the grids while ensuring equal.

During the beam systems placements, I had to make sure there are no beams at the staircase, elevators and atriums.

To make sure that columns are not clashing with doors, windows or are at the center of a room randomly.

Material & framing system selected
