Design Journal Entry - Module 8

Overall design strategy

I started the design by drawing grid lines and placing the columns on the intersections. Since the sizes of the floors are different, it was complicated to choose the location of the columns to satisfy the layout of each floor and keep open space. I also tried to keep the spans between columns under 30 ft since I use timber for all the structural elements. Finally, I decided to keep the same column layout for each level for structural purposes.

Material and framing system

To maintain the biophilic design of the building, I decided to use timber for beams and columns and keep them exposed to the exterior. I used 18 x 24 timber columns and 18 x 20 timber beams. I also used 72’’ x 48’’ x 18’’ concrete isolated footings and specified bearing floors and walls.

Structural challenges

The most challenging part was figuring out the grid to satisfy all the floors. After placing the columns and combining them with the architectural model I found out that I should move a few windows and an exterior wall for better views and interior design. I also had to figure out how to place columns to support the balconies on the second and third floors.
