Overview
Replace this text with your reflections on your design journey through class from a higher level and share your insights about the entire experience. What were:
- Key / Essential / Unique Design Features that you explored in your project.
- Stepping Stones” design that allowed for occupiable green terraces and for the building to integrate into the park naturally
- U-shaped design that created an interior garden space leading to increased daylighting potential and more social interactions
- Grey water reuse system
- Passive design: i.e. south facing orientation, low WWR, high R value windows and walls
- Your Big Successes -- what worked very well and what features you're most proud to share as examples to inspire others.
- I am most proud of my overall building design and layout. With the stepping stones design, I was able to integrate the building within the environment as well as incorporate many passive aspects. For example, the U-shape allowed for an increase in daylighting and more social connectivity. I also loved that the steps could become occupiable green terraces while providing overhangs to the floors below. The hallways were pushed to the exterior sides of the building, allowing the interior rooms to all face the courtyard. The floor plan was created to flow from public to private. The exhibition spaces, education rooms, gift shops, and cafe are on the bottom floors with offices and meeting rooms on the top floors.
- I am also very proud that I went for the Core Certification of the Living Building Challenge. It taught me how thorough a true green building needs to be and pushed my design further than I thought it could go.
- Your Big Challenges -- what aspects of the project created the biggest challenges and what would you do differently (in hindsight) to avoid or overcome these challenges.
- Not properly saving to the ACC
- I was following the videos on how to create and save a new model; however, I was not able to work on it on another computer after because it was not uploaded to the cloud. I spent multiple office hours fixing this problem until eventually Jayant taught me the proper way of saving. Now I understand the workflow for saving to the cloud.
- Not using shortcuts
- I was manually putting in every piece of the building without using any shortcuts. As I went along, I eventually learned a couple more. These immediately saved me so much time. For the future, I will research and learn many more shortcuts. This saved time can then be spent on creating a better design.
- Lessons Learned -- what sage words of advice would you share with other students who are embarking on a similar project.
- Watching the videos helps you understand the step-to-step methods.
- I would recommend going to office hours whenever possible. You will run into problems that you do not know how to solve, and you will need help. Working on the large school computers will also make your life much easier. Lastly, it is great to have the built-in time dedicated to working on the assignments because you can easily fall behind.
- Learn how to properly save and use the ACC at the very start of your modeling process.
