Key Findings from the Interview

  • more and more buildings in Tokyo have started to incorporate greenery into their design, maybe not all green roofs contribute to the environment that much, but they did raise people’s awareness regarding sustainability and what’s good for the environment.
  • recent experience of visiting an urban green area in Tokyo: visited the Showa Kinen park in April, cycling there for refreshment; it is a huge park with lawn and trees, the park is divided into sections (flower sections, lawn section, etc), it was free of charge in April
  • urban greening projects & reflections in Tokyo: environmentally friendly, cool down the building, no need for air conditioning, reduce electricity
  • major differences between novel projects like green roofs and conventional parks: Design for novel projects and traditional ones is very different, for novel projects, the design is more effortful to make use of the space, but for parks the design is not so organized and effortful
  • any expectations that haven’t been met by the urban greening projects: 1. Rooftop gardens: feels like some rooftop gardens are just for advertisement (in his opinion, Miyashita park, mainly just lawn, feels that having more trees is better for the environment).
