When you are ready to continue detailed design and documentation in Revit, you can export your Forma Building Design project as a native Revit (.rvt) file. The export creates a geolocated Revit model complete with site context and native Revit families for walls, slabs, windows, and roofs.
Workflow
- Click the Actions menu in the top toolbar, then choose Export to Revit.
- Choose the Forma Building Design elements to be included in the export.
- Choose Building Elements.
- This will convert all of the Forma Building Design buildings into Revit building elements.
- Uncheck the Toposurface and Generic Models checkboxes.
- If your project site is very large, exporting those layers can make your Revit project difficult to work with.
- You can import that contextual data for just the buiding area directly into Revit as coordination models using a different method. Linking to Coordination Models
- Choose Revit 2027 as the version to export to.
- The export process will begin.
- Depending on the size and complexity of your model, this may take from a few minutes up to 30 minutes for larger projects.
- When the export is complete, a notification will appear in the top menu bar within "Items" - "Exports".
- Click the notification or the Save button to save the .rvt file.
- You can choose to save it to:
- Local Disk on your computer, or
- Data Management (your project folder in Forma Data Management).
- Open the saved .rvt file in the Revit application to continue developing your design.
If you use the Data Management option, you’ll need to have Autodesk Desktop Connector installed on your computer to open the file in the Revit application.
What is Included in the Exported Revit Project?
The exported Revit project includes these Forma Building Design elements:
- Walls — exported as native Revit wall families
- Floors/Slabs — exported as native Revit floor families
- Roofs — exported as native Revit roof families
- Windows and doors — exported as native Revit families
- Balconies — exported as Revit groups, which include floors and railings
- Geolocation — the project retains its geographic coordinates
If you choose to export the Forma terrain and contextual data, it will also include:
- Terrain — exported as native Toposurface
- Ordered data — exported as Generic model
The Revit project also contains a Sheet for each floor of the exported buildings.
Why Does My Design Take So Long to Export?
- In this early release of Forma Building Design, curtain wall elements drastically increase export time.
- This may make the export process take up to 30 minutes.
