Case Study Analysis
💡
Choose an example of a case where a change, intervention, or innovation was made to improve the sustainable behavior of a group of people.

Apply a Design Thinking mindset to analyze this case:

  • Who were the people?
  • What was their need / POV?
  • Ideating - How Might We?
    • What is the underlying strategy that was used to change people’s behavior?
    • What other strategies could have been used?

For the current strategy — apply critical analysis

  • List 3 things aspects of this strategy that your feel worked successfully? Cite data or results.
  • 1) Used already existing resources
    • People could rent their own land/homes/apartments
    • Did not have to manufacture or build anything
    • No investment in product
    • Created changes in behavior
    • Saved so much money
    • Do not waste money to upkeep buildings as they do not own them
  • 2) Make the consumers of the resource the retailers and buyers
    • They are providing a service that allows anyone to rent out a space for a short period of time
    • Allows people to make money off their property
    • Invites incentive for retailer
    • Service creates jobs for others
    • Consumers can get a cheaper rate
    • Consumers can play both roles
    • Greatly change societal behavior by targeting instinctive need to make and save money
  • 3) The strategy targeted a gap in the market
    • The made use of already existing resources
    • People wanted cheaper places to stay
    • People wanted places that were unique and homey
    • People wanted to get to know the place they were visiting
  • List 3 specific things about this strategy that your feel weren’t successful or could be improved?
  • 1) At the start, they made it difficult to connect consumers with retailers.
  • 2) How can you trust the house will look exactly as pictured
    • How does one know the area around the house?
    • How does one know the neighbors won’t be weird?
    • How does one know the sounds won’t be loud?
      • PICTURES are limiting
      • PEOPLE can be dishonest
      • Needed more emphasis on trust
      • Need to accommodate for all senses, not just appearance

Imagine a new strategy — apply creativity and divergent thinking

  • Envision and describe 3 or more new strategies that would significantly improve the sustainable behavior through a radical / disruptive / paradigm-shifting change or innovation.
  • 1) Create eco airbnbs -> create a standard for these rentals to reach for the retailers to get a break in cuts.
    • For example -> reward for solar panels and water reuse, reward for sustainable garden, reward for encouraging sustainable behaviors etc
      • Could make a program for consumer too
  • 2) Come up with a way to experience all five settings virtually to truly feel how an airbnb feels before purchasing the rental
  • 3) Create sustainable trips where it is paid for as long as you follow the volunteering program to rebuild the world with your time there.
  • 4) Roommate tab on airbnb
  • Describe the key features (MVP) of each of these new strategies in your Design Journal posting.
  • 1) ECO AIRBNB
    • Eco-friendly airbnbs whose foundations are on reaching carbon zero while encouraging users towards sustainable movements.
  • 2) FIVESENSE
    • Ever been disappointed by the smell of a room you looked forward to being in for so long? Fear is no longer reality with fivesense, a virtual reality tour of airbnbs that allow you to sense all five
  • 3) ECOVAC
    • Ever wanted to volunteer to save the earth in a country you’ve never been to but don’t have the money? Now you can. ECOVACs pay for you to spend up to a month in a third world country working to help save our world.
  • 4) ROOMMATEAIRBNB
    • Desperately want to go on a vacation but your pockets are empty. With the new tab on airbnb, you can filter for people who are traveling to the same place as you who want to share the price of a home.
