Composite Character Profile

Nonchalant Nevel

  • Nevel just wants to have fun! He likes partying, watching football games, and hanging out with friends- sometimes under the influence of a drink or two… or three. There is never a dull moment in Nevel’s life! His favorite food group is stadium snacks, but he is always having way too much fun to pay attention to which bin he tosses his empty nacho tray into. He shoots his crumpled napkins into the garbage with the confidence of an NBA player, but his skill set matches that of a JV benchwarmer (they rarely make it in the bin…). The issue isn’t that Nevel is in a hurry or doesn’t care about sustainability. He’s just having way too much fun to prioritize or even think about properly disposing of his waste. Here is a snapshot of Nevel’s Tinder profile for some context:

Side Note: Nevel’s character is apparent at many campus events. Among students, it’s usually at parties/darties, where there is too much going on to stop and sort. Nonchalantly tossing everything in the same/wrong bin- or no bin at all- is normalized at these events. Have you seen what a frat house looks like the morning after a good party?😵 Similar behaviors can be observed at sporting events and concerts. The organizers of these events are working and maintaining their understanding of the importance of sustainability. However, most attendees see the event as a break from their day-to-day responsibilities, and subconsciously categorize waste sorting among those responsibilities they are taking a break from.

Potential Point of View Statements

Game-ify Waste Sorting

Nevel needs to make waste-sorting into a fun activity because then he will be more inclined to want to have that fun. Make waste sorting cool…

Well if it isn’t the consequences of my actions…

Nevel needs to be more serious about sorting his waste because there are consequences that directly and/or indirectly affect his fun.

Incentivize “Chalance”

Nevel needs to properly sort his waste because there is an incentive/point system that will award him with something fun.

I think this will help Nevel a lot and will be applicable to many other characters as well.

Nonchalant Nevel needs easy-to-dispose-of waste because that will support his nonchalant lifestyle while also making sure waste goes where it should.
