Key Findings from the Interview

  • There are many green areas in Shanghai and Guangzhou
  • recent experience of visiting an urban green area in Shanghai: visited a park in March for bbq with friends, it is a casual park full of tree like a forest (trees are old and tall), there’s also lakes, swamps, flowers; the park looks half wild and half human made, it is located near the city center (but is located in old town district, not CBD)
  • urban greening projects & reflections in Shanghai: A lot of new coffee shops/restaurants in shanghai uses plants/greening projects to decorate shop, (e.g. Peet’s Coffee in Shanghai uses living wall for decoration), there’s a recent trend of more and more shops starting to adopt greenery to attract young people (because eco friendly is considered a modern thing to attract youngsters)
  • major differences between novel projects like green roofs and conventional parks: 1. Novel urban greening projects are more attractive to young people, they creates influencer effects; she thinks conventional parks are better for environment, it is the natural way that plants are grown, but as long as the novel projects are environmentally friendly, she is okay with them
  • any expectations that haven’t been met by the urban greening projects: she doesn’t have much expectations for green, probably because she grew up in Guangzhou where green is everywhere, take greenery for granted
