Project 2 - Interviews

1) how long do you find yourself waiting?

if good, around 1 minute. Sometimes when the kids don’t get on, still only around 5 minutes

in the car lineup for 20 minutes waiting. from the beginning of the roundabout to the end only 5 minutes.

2) how frequently do you find yourself waiting

not often

not really, I usually wait until its less busy to pick the kid up or have them walk to another block

3) what do you find yourself waiting on the most

because I have to be next to the curb and not just on the road to pick the kid up, finding a spot on that curb is the most time consuming.

when I have to wait for other cars to move after the kid got on already, after they pick up the kid they take their sweet time talking to their kid before hitting the gas

4) What are you pain points with the pickup process

when other parents are waiting for the kids, they just park on the curb, not paying attention to the signs, which means I as a parent whose kid is already at the curb can’t get there conveniently.

The line needs to keep moving and stop being distracted. The kid should be responsible for finding the car so the parent doesn’t need to responsible for anything besides driving. Else I keep traffic behind me.

5) what else would you like to share about your pickup experience

Its a one way road, it can’t be a two direction or else it will conflict with traffic. The flow has to be clear because there are a lot of blind areas when driving and kids are always weaving around cars. Safety is the largest concern. Convenience and timing are the other concerns. The curb has to be a specific height or else the car can’t see it, the color of the curb also. The roads must also consider the car size, like a SUV or a family car, or how many stations the curb can hold at a time.

  • drainage, slope of the drive through
  • lane space distance
  • how many stations, how far, how long (at most 3 stations)
  • consider difficult scenarios in which cars aren’t able to get in
  • what signs are needed (how big, what height, color), what road markings

The parent should not be getting out of the car, it is entirely the students job to get in and out quickly.
