Observation:

Wherever I go on campus, may it be to class or to grab a meal at Lakeside Diner, my go to footwear is my Birkenstocks. From what I’ve noticed, the majority of the students on campus wear Birkenstocks at some point or the other during the day.

And from where I come i.e India, Birkenstocks are viewed as a luxury item. In fact, my sister agreed to purchase a pair for me on one condition, getting into Stanford Summer Session!

As much as I love wearing them all the time, I do wish I owned a few more pairs to suit the occasion.

Idea:

Reduce the need of several pairs of Birkenstocks and manufacture something multifunctional made up with sustainable alternatives.

Key features:

  • Detachable straps with snap buttons and buckles made out of recycled steel from cans.
  • Various straps can be purchased for a single pair of Birkenstock soles depending on the occasion or choice of outfit of the consumer.
  • Leather used to make the straps are replaced with a combination of sustainable and durable alternatives like bamboo. (There could also be some amount of leather mixed into this material so that the comfort isn’t jeopardised)
  • Base of the footwear is made out of recycled corks from wine bottles.
