Overview
Replace this text with your reflections on your design journey through class from a higher level and share your insights about the entire experience. What were:
- Key / Essential / Unique Design Features that you explored in your project.
- Energy Efficiency: Roof and level 5 terrace area are used for solar panel installation. Curtain walls facade and central atrium maximally utilizes daylight.
- Integration of Modern Aesthetics, Structural Design and Nature: The building has an innovative form - diamond shape where the middle level has the largest area. While this design requires additional structural support for the overhang, the shape enhances its visual appeal and uniqueness. On the other hand, this creates expansive viewing opportunities at higher levels: large areas of outdoor terraces provide abundant outdoor nature access. This design thus fully utilizes the building’s location: Since there are not many obstructions at west and south sides, visitors are able to enjoy the costal view while walking around or eating at the cafe.
- Environment Friendly Construction: Building systems are designed with standard grids and sizes to improve construction efficiency. Pre-fabricated curtain wall panels and locally available materials can be used for fast construction and minimum noise.
- Your Big Successes -- what worked very well and what features you're most proud to share as examples to inspire others.
- The initial space design really helped make the design of different models easier. The central areas (atrium, stairs, restrooms) were designed to be at the same location at each level, making structural and mechanical design more efficient.
- I’m also glad that the design features mentioned above are satisfied. I was initially worried about the if the building shape would satisfy structural and area requirements, but it gradually worked out.
- Your Big Challenges -- what aspects of the project created the biggest challenges and what would you do differently (in hindsight) to avoid or overcome these challenges.
- Model coordination was one of the biggest challenge. As initially I did not link the previous models when designing new models, there were some conflicts that were harder to deal with afterwards. I also had to go back and forth between architectural models and other models to adjust the ceilings, etc. In hindsight, I should have considered the other models before implementing the architectural model, and made sure to link different models when designing new ones.
- Learning how to use Revit to achieve the desired features also took a lot of time. Routing the HVAC and plumbing systems was especially challenging. Routing could be hard to do in 3D, and being able to connect and route well needs familiarity of the tool and good use of section view.
- Lessons Learned -- what sage words of advice would you share with other students who are embarking on a similar project.
- Get familiar with Revit. Learn the materials from CEE 220A.
- Make sure to think at a high level at the beginning. When planning space and architectural design, also think about how it would influence structural and mechanical design.
- Consider model coordination at every stage of design.
- Walk arond the building and look for what needs to be fixed.
- Start early. Dealing with details could take a lot of time.
