Hi everyone! My name is Maddie and I am a Senior stuyding Environmental Systems Engineering (with an Urban Systems Focus) and Urban Studies. At Stanford, I’ve prioritized interdisciplinary courses at the intersection of infrastructure and policy to help me with my overall goal of cultivating holistically healthy urban communities. I’ve also studied abroad in Santiago, Chile and New York City where I had the opportunity to challenge my understanding of urban sustainability in two incredible case cities.
I’ve had experience in the public sector with the New York City Department of Environmental Protections, where I interned in the Commissioner’s Office, working on the agency’s 5 year strategic plan to improve sustainable water projects and policy. I’ve also worked with Menlo Park city councilwoman Maria Doerr on local downtown vibrancy and sustainable infrastructure initiatives. In the affordable housing industry, I interned for 1010 Development, an affordable housing company in Los Angeles, where I identified sites for future affordable housing and helped manage current projects.
I am interested in this course because I want to challenge myself to create tanglible solutions for the imagined sustainable future our world is (hopefully) moving towards. I am eager to soak in any opportunity for urban design, and I think this course will allow me to hone my passion for the built environment with skills in design-thinking to creatively manifest new ideas. As I reach the end of my Stanford undergraduate career, I want to invest my time in potential projects that will respark my energy and excitement for sustainable buildings, communities, and lifestyles.
